About THE NEW YORK LEARNING LAB

ABOUT US.png

Johns Hopkins was founded on the principle that by pursuing big ideas and sharing what we learn, we make the world a better place. The New York Learning Lab (NYLL) strives to do just that for New Yorkers with learning differences.

The NYLL is a Manhattan-based research project under the direction of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Neurology, Division of Cognitive Neurology/Neuropsychology. The focus of the NYLL is to better understand and potentially improve social functioning in adults with cognitive disabilities. We are studying the impact of participation in recreational groups on learning, social engagement, and quality of life. Our working hypothesis is that getting together with peers in a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment may give individuals with disabilities a sense of purpose and lead to an improvement in quality of life and other qualities that we can actually measure. We expect to find that when it comes to learning new things, individuals are better together, no matter their age or learning style.

We offer adult education classes on a semester basis and social events throughout the year. We host Monday evening Art Class as well as Meetups and Special Events throughout the year at our Grand Central location in Midtown. Tuesday afternoon Basketball Group is held at an offsite facility on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Thursday morning Movement Group and Friday morning Chat & Chew are held at offsite facilities on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
